About us - a company history

Scarfe Audio Visual is a family firm which has been well-known in the TV and audio trade in Norwich since the 1950s. Robert Scarfe took over what was then R Baker in Denmark Road from his grandfather – also Robert – after serving an apprenticeship as a TV engineer at Panks in Upper St Giles. The original shop flourished with the arrival of colour television and was subsequently joined by a second and more prestigious establishment in Unthank Road, which expanded into specialist audio and was one of the first in Norwich to sell compact discs. Scarfe Audio Visual was one of the audio retailers which set up Hi-Fi Markets, which was a successful national independent retail chain importing brands such as NAD direct from the Far East. It also sold the first video cameras – with unwieldy separate recorders – which became available in the early 1980s. Inevitably we started using the cameras ourselves and it was not too long before the video production business took over from retailing. We started with weddings and gradually diversified into the wide range of social and commercial videography which we tackle today. After that our full-time video and audio production business moved to production facilities at The Business Centre in East Carleton where it operated for 10 years before moving to its current custom-built air-conditioned production facility at Little Melton on the south-west side of Norwich near the UEA and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. It is still a family business as Robert works in partnership with his wife Jane who is a qualified and experienced print and radio journalist – which comes in useful for commercial scripting.
